Break it off or RTD could get the whole thing I am not sure of a dip though but there is probably.

I agree, you want to cut the dead part off and take just a slight bit of the edge of still alive part too (cut on the good side of the line between dead and alive).

Then, I'd dip in Revive from Two Little Fishies (Julian Sprungs co.)  I have found that to be much less harsh than the Tropic Marin coral dip or the Seachem or Lugols.  I have used many.  Those are all iodine based and are pretty harsh....IMO.

I'd then put it in a fairly medium/high flow area, but a not bombarding it.  That type of chalice doesn't like too intense light, more of the medium light or lower/medium, I have found.  I'd also do a water change...maybe 25% or so.  I believe in using a great quality salt and not using these cheap salts.  I use Kent Marine myself with excellent results.

Keep a close eye on your chalice in the coming days, etc.  If it starts losing more tissue, I'd frag it and put it in a medium flow somewhat lower light area.  I use 400 watt metal halides, so for me that would be off to the side at a high angle from directly under the bulb and on the bottom of a 24" deep tank.  Even a somewhat indirect lighting area would be good to start with.  "a mellow place".  I saved one that was much further gone than that and I had to frag mine saving 4 separate eyes from different sections of the chalice.  each one was a single eye frag.  All lived and are now about the size of my thumb, but very healthy.  Sometimes Chalices are tough to find the perfect lighting condition.  You should experiment until it is found by moving it until color and growth are optimized.

My friend who is a Chalice fan said he got one to stop receding by put Super glue Gel all along the receding edge.  I have not tried this.

  Thanks reefcorals..

I also run 400w MH with t5 actinics. i did exactly that.. the only thing left is to cut it up.. I been keeping a close eye on it and have not seen anymore receding so i think we are i the clear.. I use deltecs h2ocean salt and its GREAT!!! every 2 weeks 20% already did a revive dip a little less than recomended dose. Do you think the chalice will still grow over the old skeleton,or should i still cut off the dead parts?

Talked to the guy I know who farms these corals. Said to cut away all the bad plus some of the good next to it. Then frag it into 1 inch pieces following general chalice fragging trends.

yes, I'd still cut the bad part off.

How is it doing?

linesider 18 posts

all i did was a revive dip.. water change with deltec h2ocean..placed in moderate light and flow.Feed all mixes of food.rogers food,Oyster eegs, ect...looks like receding stopped.. i did not cut off the dead parts cause i dindt want to shock it any more during its decline... now if i dont see any new growth i might cut but for now all is well so no need for the wet saw to come out..

next mission seahorses.. was donated hundreds of baby brazilian fry ponies.. new post coming..

well there is already healed sections that i didnt need to cut.. Did a dip in revive little diluted 3 days apart 2 times. rinsed and replace in tank.. been spot feeding 3-4 times a day/night.. looks like its gonna make it as long as i keep my water params stable. feedings seem to plump it up a lots so keep that up......

I use revive it works most every time if it isnt to far gone.  Looks healthy enough for it to work.
