Is this the big round frag tank your setting up? Do you have a fuge on it? In many of the tanks ive done, ive found that when you cycle the tank with algae and stuff it really helps alot. The caulerpa algae draws the elements, nitrates and such away from the hair algae and keeps it under control. I use grape, feather, and fern caulerpa, and chaeto algae.

No tis was supposed to be a general discussion n the best ways to prevent and treat the ever so awful green hair algae! I used TLC Smart Start to instantly cycle the tank and that shit is the BOMB!!!
I wish I had a fuge I need some equipment bad!! lol

Yes, bc about every 6 months your lights are going to start to loose some spectrums which is why they should be replaced and could be a cause of hair algae. As for the sand bed. You need to have a really shallow bed or a super deep bed. I think a really deep bed is good. It grows sooo many worms and bugs that are wonderful for keeping the sand clean and the tank healthy. Personally, i dont like chemicals. You fix one problem but make others. Its a closed system so whatever you add stays. I like to do things the natural way. Healthier for the tank as well.

dont dose hair algae, buy a tang or two.. Fixes all hair algae problems!

A little FYI. Tangs might pick at it some if they get hungry, but they dont like it. It has tiny barbs on it like hooks and it gets caught in their mouths.

my tang didnt like my hair algae that much either but he did eat it at times, but my bali sea monster and my algae blenny loved it...

i agree with the dont add no bs to your tank the best results are in ur water quality and keep your skimming up and have plenty of live rock for natural filtration. Nothing beats being as natrual as possible

I cannot solve my algae problem but i control it by using a small Fuge with some Macro algae which uses up the excess nutrients, and overfeeding if any, also reducing the lenght of time i was running the light for. by an hour or two. and once i get it back under control i return the light to normal hours of operation. and added a Hawian Kole Tang, Great Grazer for all type of algae. also have a lavender tang to do some grazing. also having 1 or two sand sifting stars to up turm the sand bed which will help release some of the nutrients  in to the water colum which can then be used up by the macro algae and finally i run my skimmer 24/7.

Thats good hope it starts turing around for you
