some updated pics of my tank

reefsurgeon 259 posts

hey all.  just wanted to add some updated pics of my tank.  i'm getting stuff ready to frag, so everything it kind of scattered around, but everything is growing fast and looks happy (knock on wood).  i normally don't use a flash, but i did in a few of the pics just to see how they would come out.  sorry i can't get a straight on full view of it, but it's in my hallway at the front door, and there isn't enough room for me to back up enough to get that shot.  i'm no photographer, so obviously the colors aren't done justice, but you all get the point, i think.  hope you enjoy the eye candy!  if you see any corals you like, leme know (my frog spawn mother colony is off limits, but i do have a baby that i fragged from her that i will sell).  the toadstool leather next to my frogspawn is the one i have been talking about selling.  i know a few people are looking for toadstools.  anyhoo, happy reefing!  -Ash

here's the baby frogspawn in the back behind the joker palys...growing very fast. just as colorful and health as mother colony.  electric green with purple/pink tips. is glued to a plug.

my little cuties!  Selene and Lucian in their MASSIVE bubble tip anemone...Yes, this IS a bubble tip!  when I first got it, it was probably 5 inches in diameter, and had bubble tips...now it's larger than a dinner plate, and it's tenticles are REALLY long and not bubbley at all!  I personally don't like the bubble tips, so i'm glad that it decided to pose as a long tenticle instead!  lol!

thanks for the kind words everyone!  i appreciate it very much!  it's actually not even close to how i want it.  everything has grown so fast that i have to start fragging, so like i said, things are all scattered throughout.  but thank you for the compliments regardless!  it's nice to hear fellow reef keepers say that!  cause i look at it and see all the things i want to DO and CHANGE, and people come over my house who know NOTHING about reefs and just gush over the tank, and i just go on and on about how much "this isn't going to be here...and this needs to go there...and i need to do this...and i'm not sure where i'm going to put this...i need a bigger tank...blah blah blah..." and they just look at me like i'm crazy!  lol.

julio, most of my circulation inside the tank comes from my two hydor 4 power heads.  i have them on the hydor controllable wavemaker.  during the day i have them alternating from the highest flow to the lowest flow every 6 seconds.  at night, i turn the higher flow down by half.  as far as my turnover of water throughout the filtration, i have a 45 gallon 5 chamber refugium and another 20 gallon sump that houses my skimmer...both the sumps are T'd to a blueline 70 pump (with head loss, it's probably running at about 1300gph or so...my dual corner overflows both can drain 700 gph at their best)...the returns that came with the corner flo kits were two double split return loc-line return lines...as you can see in the pics, i decided to extend the returns, and i added more loc-lines, so now each return is split three ways. this gives me the ability to aim one along the back of each side, one on each side pointing up to breach the water for more oxygen circulation, and the third on each side to point along the front.  this helps prevent any dead spots.  i USED to run a 1" SQWD on my return pump before i got the hydor controllable system, and it actually worked quite well (when it wasn't broken...haha!)...it broke two or three times and i started getting really ticked off that EVERYTIME i did a water change and turned the pump back on, i had to turn it off and mess with the stupid SQWD.  So I took that thing out, bit the bullet, and bought the hydor system.  loved it from the second i turned it on!  corals and fish love it too!  anyhow, that's my circulation in a nutshell.

thanks again for the compliments. it means a lot since i put it all together myself...where there weren't power tools involved, of course!  lol!  and of course with my back injury, i couldn't put the tank and canopy on myself...as far as plumbing, my brother originally plumbed it for a mag 24 that i had running on there for several months...i HATED it...so i bought the blueline 70, but it's a VERY long pump, so with the limited space between my fuge and other sump and the wall, i had to replumb EVERYTHING to the pump.  all the plumbing TO the pump is hard plumbed, so it was a PITA to redo...especially since i'm no plumber!  i just watched my brother like a hawk when he first did everything (i'm a quick learner), and after many many crumbled up pieces of paper covered with ideas of how i could make this pump fit, and measuring after measuring after measuring, it finally hit me how to make it work...had to take EVERYTHING he did out, and redo it all...lots of PVC cutting, priming, gluing, and praying that my measurements were correct and that I had no leaks...

i've been keeping reefs since i was about 6, but as you all know "keeping" a reef and building it up INSIDE is MUCH different from putting the WHOLE setup together and making it work. this is the largest one i have planned and put together on my own, so i'm glad i've been able to be even MORE successful with this tank than in ANY other tanks i've kept and/or put together.  i never kept many SPS before, but i wanted to this time, so it means a lot to have anyone who knows about reefing or even anyone who doesn't say my tank looks good so far.  it's been ALMOST a year...not quite a year yet...i'm very happy with it...and of course, i'm now itching to start a larger one...as soon as you get the new "dream tank" established, the next "dream tank" begins to build in you head!  lol!  you all know what i mean!  i would have to get rid of all my furniture in my living room to get anything larger though, so i guess i will have to wait until i move out of my town house.  lol.  my father has a custom 300 gallon that he doesn't take care of AT ALL and everytime he sees any of my tanks he complains...it's funny cause he got myself and my brother into the hobby, and my brother and i kept learning and expanding our knowledge, but my father never did...he just pays people to take care of it, mostly...so now he has been asking ME to fix HIS tank for years!  lol!  which if he gave me his credit card and full reign, i am TOTALLY willing!  haha!

anyway, i'm babbling again, and i have an appointment.  thanks again everyone! it really does mean a lot! and if anyone has any suggestions or constructive criticism, feel free to let it loose!  i'm always open to new ideas!grin happy reefing!   heart, Ash

U got that right. Its the product of alot of time. How's my guys doin at world wide corals? We used to live in Titusville, but now we r down in west plam beach.

They are good!  I love my boys!  Gona be heading over there next week, most likely.  Want me to say hi to anyone for you?

maxima 159 posts

I was going there back when they first opened. Only really knew one guy there really well, but crap, i've forgotten his name. It was mike or ryan. idk. im terrible with names. Just know everything bout reefs, lol.

reefsurgeon 259 posts

lol.  well, there is a ryan.  he's one of the guys i'm close with.  he has dark hair, glasses.  he's kind of shy.  and then there is chris and he has been there since before they moved too.  tale, short blonde hair.  he's one of my bestfriends.  lou and vic are the owners.  they are super cool too.  you're probably talking about one of them.  love them all!  the other boys are newer, so probably not who you are talking about...but they are awesome too!

maxima 159 posts

Ok, he would prob never remember me by my name, just face. I dont think i ever told him my name. I knew ryan and vic. Ryan talked to Vic one day and started giving me free stuff and like half off bc i was buying so much there. lol. I prob made them as big as they are from all the crap i would buy. Spent alot of money there. I learned alot of stuff from them tho. One time they were switching out their lights and ballasts for their MH, and i got some awesome deals on a few.

reefsurgeon 259 posts

yea, they are really awesome at the hooking up on things if they like you!  and yea, they definitely know their stuff!  i love it there!  i'm like a kid in a candy store...but i'm really a hot chick who knows a lot about reef keeping, so i don't have to steal the candy when nobody is looking!  they just hook me up!  and i have a hot girlfriend too, that they all met a couple months ago so that doesn't hurt! lol!  but really, i just love going there and hanging out.  they are a blast.  i usually just go when they are closed and goof off with them cause, as you already know, i have most fun when i'm "just one of the guys".  heh!  if it wasn't for my back injury, i would be working there.  they have been trying to get me to work there forever, but they are about 30 minutes from me, and i can't always drive with my back thing...i wish they were closer and my back was better, cause then i wouldn't be unemployed sad

Im sry, that sucks :( theres a store here like them. I've tried to get hired there but they have to many ppl right now.
I do know a guy in Merritt Island tho that has a wholesale thing he's starting up. Wish i still lived up there, i would work there. He is only selling to stores, but i know him really really well and he owes me money, so he is basicly giving me free stuff. Im gonna get alot of frags and some really nice and big acans from him. He told me that he can get the cleaner shrimp for $0.75. Wow right! The exotic Acans he get for like 3 or 4 dollars a head. Its crazy!

reefsurgeon 259 posts

really?!  i have a new obsession with acans!  i got my first one on the first LPS group buy, and i have 3 more coming my way from russ.  what kind of stuff can your friend get?

maxima 159 posts

I dont think he will sell to anyone :( But ill see what i can get and hook u up! He goes straight to all the divers. He has contacts from like 25 yrs ago and from all around the world. If God makes it, he can prob get it.
