how to cure Ich/Ick

waitasecun 129 posts

so heres my plan of action.....I am going to raise the temperature of my aquarium(i have no sps so no worries) to around 82-83 degrees. This will speed up the life cycle of the ich.....making them drop of my fish and into their free-floating form. Then they will die from my UV sterilizer that I am buying and installing tomorrow! Thoughts, comments, and suggestions are appreciated......thanks!!!

What size tank do u have. I have a 57 watt "Aqua Ultraviolet" on my 155 reef. Bang for your buck, this is the best deal. It is rated of up too 355 gal. and does a perfect job.

They are the cheapest on ebay right now, $320 without wiper, and $340 with wiper. I would get it with the wiper. Its soooo much easier to clean.

For the most part though, champion lighting is always the cheapest, although ebay has a good deal right now, i like champion the most. They are only 20 bucks more.

who convinces the lil ick spores to jump off of the fish and swim through a UV?   IME, (if running *a natural system*) UV will do more harm to a reef tank than good. Relieving all stress and feeding gfood foods high in Omega 3s will cause Ick to run its course.  However, if the stress is never removed, the ick will always cause problems. Look at it like a common cold.. If you run yourself ragged and are stressed, the cold will break you down, but if you get some good rest and eat your vitimac C, the cold goes away.

thanks for that......and yes, I am running a natural system and I did not want to run UV, but I dont want ICH killing off all my tangs.....and perhaps other fish as well....

I agree that its better without one, but i think the pros are better then the cons.
If u are having problems with your tangs though, its prob bc there is electric in the tank. Get a grounding probe for your tank. This will get rid of the volts in your tank, which is one large reason why tangs get stressed out.

I agree, but a bigger reason that tangs are stresses ( which may cause other fish to show ick and not the tangs) are usually over stocking, or stocking in a tank that is too small. Many fish such as clowns never travel more than 2 feet from their home in the wild, but some fish - like tangs, will travel miles in a very short time.  IMe/IMO  a 4' tank will be too small for many tangs.. Sure, it can be done, but if it is done, and if youre seeing ick, the tanks size is usually the culprit.

How big is your tank? And how long have you had the tangs?
