ah Russ, i have never seen an ocean bed without sand or mud, takes away the true reef looks.

I disagree 10000 %

I should elaborate :).. There are a lot of different ways to set up a reef tank and they can all work... I just prefer all of the benefits and aesthetics of a properly set up sand bed.

Alright guys, jeeezzze! What I was trying to say was that for a situation like his, where your throwing a tank together really really fast and adding fish the next day, sand isn't such a great idea. And if you plan on selling and moving stuff in and out of the tank, sand itn't a great idea. BUT, if its a show tank, or you give the tank enough time to settle then sand is awesome. I love sand and wouldn't have it any other way. But also, you have to have some nice deep sand beds for everything to house all the little critters good, and give the tank time to settle.
Also putting sand in from an existing tank is very helpful, instead of just adding ALL new sand. Thats not such a good idea on a tank 2 days old with 40 fish in it already. Thats what i was saying.

Deep sandbed in main + deep mud bed in fuge= WHOLE LOTTA HEALTHY GOODNESS!!
