It's a sad sad day. lost my tri color sps

fishguru 25 posts

Yesterday I am sad to say i lost a dear and old friend. One of the oldest tank mates I had. My tri color acro has lost more that 3/4 of its tissue overnight. I don't know what happened. The only new thing I did was add a new brand. Mag and Stro. to my tank the day before. I worked fri. night and came home to bed. When my wife got home from work she came to wake me up and tell me it was white. The bottom I saw was still colored an polyps were out. I separated the dead from the live to help it get light now that the bush that was above it is now gone hopefully I will be able to save it. I am very upset that was the first coral I had baught from a frag and grown it out and everything that had grown is now dead.

sorry about your loss, I know I hate when things happen and you just cannot figure out a rationale for it.

Sorry for you lost John,  I know how it is to loose something that you put so much into caring for it. Good luck with saving what left of it.\

glad to hear you were able to save some of your acro.  one of my first frags of my newest tank(this is my first tank with lots of SPS...only kept a few in my other tanks...) had grown out soooooo well...superman monti...it fell a while back and landed on another acro...only about 30 minutes and it was already dead in the whole center...i nursed it back, and it was looking AMAZING...even better than before!  then, suddenly it started dying again.  my pink polyp cap started to die off too!  and same as you, the only thing i changed was the brand of mag in that time.  i'm trying to nurse them back again...there are still some sections alive...hoping i can save them both and they can grow back over themselves...that's the good thing about stonies...they just encrust right back over themselves if you can get them healthy again.
anyway, i wonder if my issue and your issue are the same...change in mag brand.  it SHOULDN'T do anything bad, assuming you dose the same as with the previous brand, but i mean, i've had times where i bought new salt to mix...same brand i always bought...and the alk was like 16!  normally when i mixed it before it was 10-12!  i've read about a lot of people having issues like that with salt, and that's the SAME brand.  i imagine things just as strange and seemingly random could happen with changing the brand of any chemical too.  still...since it's JUST magnesium, and not like changing brands of an A & B mix (which i've done before and saw bad results right away...) which have multiple chemicals in them, it seems REALLY odd that it would have THAT severe of a negative affect, no?  anyway, glad you are seeing your favorite come back to life...keep your fingers crossed for my superman and my pink polyp cap.  sad

I keep the temp at a steady 76 never really moves from there. I have a brand coming in that I ordered yesterday called E.V.S. it's 2 parts. Did a little research and for the price I am gonna give it a try.

  Thanks!

To be honest, my temp is all over the place.  I REFUSE to buy a chiller, and my canopy is closed, so with three 250w MH, my temp gets up to 81ish.  I've got three fans.  Two 4.75in Icecaps...One on one side pulling cool air in, and the other on the other end for exhaust...and I also have a huge blower in the stand that blows over my fuge, pump, and second sump to cause some evaporative cooling underneath.  I had my fans on timers, so my temp only fluctuated a few degrees, but since it's been so cold here some days and others it's not cold at all, I couldn't keep track of all my fan timers and when they should turn on and off from one day to the next(no, I don't have my fans hooked up to a temp prob...I know...BAD ASH!!  lol!).  I ended up just ordering a heater and now I just leave my fans on 24/7, and when the temp gets too low, my heater brings it back up to 78.5.  I need to grab a couple more Icecap fans and put them in top of my canopy...One in, one out...Or maybe both out...Not sure yet...I'm thinking about replacing my MHs with some super t5 units and some high output LED units(so I don't lose my shimmer)...An expensive investment outright, but would save A LOT on electricity, that's for sure...And would be able to keep the temp regulated.

Anyway, John, what have you been using for calcium and alk?  Since I moved to Orlando (2003), I've been using something called Aqua Philic Calium/Alk.  The first REAL LFS I found out here, Ocean Blue, is where I picked it up.  The guy who own the store, Vinh, mixes it and sells it.  He's been doing it for over a decade.  I bought it originally because I saw his display tanks and asked him what he used, and he told me that he only ever uses that and then doses with phyto and stuff every now and then.  I've had great results in all my tanks.  I ran out a while back and he didn't have any in stock the week I ran out, so I picked up the "New" Brightwell A&B at WWC.  Let me tell you, I DID NOT like it(not WWC's fault...not THEIR brand)...My corals HATED it.  I didn't even finish the bottles.  I just bought the Aqua Philic as soon as Vinh got it back in stock, and my tank started looking happy and colorful again.  I'm not sure what he puts in that stuff, but my coralline algae growth is insane, and so is my coral growth and coloration.  When I switched to the other stuff, things stopped growing, polyp extention sucked, and colors stopped popping as much.  When it comes to the two part mixtures, be really careful, and keep a close eye on EVERYTHING.  It could be the best or worst thing you do for your tank.  It's really a toss up when dosing that stuff.  Some people have great results with one brand, and others have horrible results.  Let me know how the switch goes.  Hope you have a great result! grin -Ash
